Industry: Leisure & Entertainment
Employees: 2,000
Interface: ADP

Spirit Mountain Gaming understood how the money flowed in. Stromberg helped them keep it there with better labor cost management.

Spirit Mountain Gaming, Inc. in Grand Ronde, Oregon, hosts millions of visitors each year at its 90,000 square-foot casino. Founded to enhance the economic self-sufficiency of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde, Sprit Mountain offers casino games, restaurants, entertainment, and lodging to its guests. As Oregon’s top tourist destination, it’s not easy to track time and attendance of their 2,000 employees.

Challenge: An outdated time-keeping system

In the leisure industry, automated time and attendance makes employees more productive and helps companies control costs. Spirit Mountain was using an inefficient time-tracking system that didn’t meet their needs. “Our previous product was very limited,” says Mark Kroeker, Finance Supervisor for Spirit Mountain. “The time clocks could export a file to Excel, but the supervisors had to do the rest.”

When they realized they needed to update their old system, Spirit Mountain looked for a company that could provide security, time and exception history reporting, overtime tracking, and scheduling. The system also needed to meet the gaming commission’s Bureau of Labor Industry guidelines for time tracking. Spirit Mountain needed to have a time clock actually being punched, not hours manually entered into an Excel file and exported to their payroll system.

Solution: Automated time and attendance with an interface into payroll

Spirit Mountain chose Stromberg over its competitors because of its client-oriented approach and its long history of developing advanced time and attendance software. Stromberg exceeded the requirements of Spirit Mountain for managing employee attendance and tracking labor costs.

Spirit Mountain replaced their outdated system with Stromberg’s Enterprise system and a proximity reader data collection system. When they began collecting accurate time and labor information, they saw an immediate improvement in their workforce management operations.

“In this industry, you have people on the floor at the games at particular times, and if an employee is not there or the tables aren’t open, you’re not generating revenue,” states Kroeker. “You need people on the clock when they’re supposed to be, and Stromberg’s time and attendance system tracks that.”

Fewer payroll errors

Spirit Mountain used Stromberg’s ADP Payroll Interface to send time and labor information directly to payroll, resulting in less manual data collection and fewer payroll processing errors. The interface complemented the Enterprise system, giving managers a high degree of confidence that their paychecks would be accurate.

A more productive workforce

Stromberg’s Enterprise system also helped Spirit Mountain optimize their workforce. The detailed reporting and analytical features of the software allowed department supervisors to track where their labor dollars were going and determine how they might be used more productively.

Stromberg’s front-line labor management solutions reduced labor costs and provided an efficient solution for managing Spirit Mountain’s employees. Stromberg played a fundamental role in Spirit Mountain’s status as the number one tourist destination in Oregon and helped them to focus on their visitors, not on the productivity of their employees.
